How the Cremation Process Works
We guide families through each step with clarity and care. Below is a simple overview of what to expect:
- Notify the Funeral Home
Contact us as soon as a death occurs. We will begin coordinating transportation and next steps.
- Arrangement Conference
We meet with the family, in person or virtually, to review wishes, gather information, and plan services.
- Authorization Forms Completed
The legal Next of Kin completes all required cremation authorization paperwork.
- Contract & Payment
A service agreement is completed outlining services, costs, and payment arrangements.
- Funeral Home Coordination
Our team manages all aspects of the process, including permits, filings, and coordination with the state and medical professionals.
Four Steps for Cremation (exact requirements are based on the state in which the person passed away)
Before cremation can take place, the following must be completed:
- Authorization by Legal Next of Kin
The individual with the legal right of disposition must sign the cremation authorization. - Medical Certification of Death
A physician or nurse practitioner must complete and sign the medical portion of the death certificate. - Medical Examiner Approval
The Commonwealth of Virginia Medical Examiner must issue authorization for cremation. - Positive Identification
A visual identification of the deceased must be completed by the Next of Kin or authorized individual.
Who Can Authorize Cremation?
*Most states recognize a legal hierarchy whereby all living members of the highest class listed share equal responsibility to execute the authorization in agreement.
- Designated Agent
(Named in a written document to control disposition of remains.)
- Surviving Spouse
- All Adult Children
- Both Parents
- All Adult Siblings
- Next Degree of Kinship (in order)
- Grandchildren
- Grandparents
- Aunts / Uncles
- Cousins
- Guardian of the Decedent
(If legally appointed prior to death.)
- Any Other Person Willing to Assume Responsibility
(May require court involvement.)

Important Notes
- We Cannot Bypass the Hierarchy
Even if one person is paying or planning cremation arrangements, authorization must come from the proper Next of Kin. - Delays Can Occur if a Disagreement Exists
Cremation cannot proceed without proper legal authorization from the appropriate party/parties.
