Obituary for William Lester Hampton

William Lester Hampton, Jr.
February 27,1935 - May 30, 2018

William Lester Hampton Jr, also known as Willie or Bill to his family and friends, was born to William Lester Hampton and Eva Mae (Tomlinson) Hampton in Fireco, WV. He was raised in West Virginia, alongside four brothers and one sister, in a loving, Christian home.

After graduating high school, Bill joined the United States Army; he served active duty from May 1957 - May 1959, and reserves until March 1963. Upon completion of his military service, Bill moved to the Washington D.C. area where he joined the Metropolitan Police Department. He served the citizens of the District of Columbia for 31 years, formed lifelong fraternal bonds with his partners and coworkers, and had achieved the rank of Sergeant. He retired in 1994.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was an active member of Franconia United Methodist Church, an avid golfer and supporter of law enforcement. Over the years he volunteered many hours for the Fraternal Order of Police, DC Lodge #1, and the Morals Division Alumni Association. Bill loved music, he loved to play the guitar and he loved family time at the beach in Ocean City, NJ, and the Outer Banks, NC. Bill especially looked forward to “work week” with his brothers in OBX. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn with his John Deere tractor, boating, water-skiing and fishing throughout his lifetime. As recently as last summer, Bill surf-fished from the beach in Duck, NC with his grandson Joshua, who was the light of his life. Bill and Joshua were “best buddies,” and spent many hours snuggling, telling stories, playing on the iPad, riding “John” the tractor and doing whatever Joshua wanted to do. As Bill would say, “anything for the boy!”

Bill will be sorely missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his wife Barbara Hampton, daughter Christa Harrison (partner Jason Giles), grandson Joshua Giles; his siblings Jim Hampton (Sarah), Betty Kidwell (late Jerry), Frank Hampton (Jeanette) and Don Hampton (Nancy). He is also survived by generations of nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws who love him dearly. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Bob Hampton (surviving spouse Louise), and his beloved son-in-law, Robert “Bubba” Harrison (surviving spouse Christa).

Donations can be made in his honor to the Fraternal Order of Police, DC Lodge #1, Washington, DC and The American Cancer Society.
