John G. Fox (84) On Saturday, May 10, 2014, John passed away peacefully at his home in Springfield, VA. Beloved husband of Hilda M. Fox of 63 years; cherished father of Cheryl M. Cotter (Bill), Sharon R. Orr (Jimmy), John M. Fox and his late wife Tina, Charleen M. Smith, Joseph W. Fox (Jill), and Robert P. Fox (Shari); brother of Rose Marie Altman; grandfather to 14 grandchildren ; great-grandfather to 1 great grandchild. He will truly be missed by many. John's service to his country included a 30-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He served as a Military Intelligence officer with duty stations in Guam, Germany, Korea, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Benning, GA, Ft. Oliver, MD, Ft. Shafter, HI, the Pentagon, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, where he served as Commander of the U.S. Intelligence Command supporting General William Westmoreland. His military career was marked with many distinguished service awards, including the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in a combat zone. He retired in 1975 with the rank of Colonel. Following his distinguished military career, John was the Director of Human Resources for the Wills Group / Southern Maryland Oil Company for 14 years. John served his community by volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister for 20 years. He also made hospital visits to pediatric cancer patients and volunteered at the American Red Cross. Some of John's many and varied interests, included reading, bowling, photography, performing "magic tricks", traveling and enjoying fine cuisine. He loved his wife, family and friends and always made people feel special. He was a friend to all. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel 5755 Castlewellan Dr. Alexandra, VA 22315 on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-8PM. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church 7600 Old Keene Mill Rd. Springfield, VA 22152 on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10:30AM. Interment will take place on a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
