David Lee Powell

David (Dave) Lee Powell of Woodbridge, Virginia passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. He is preceded in death by his mother, Gladys (Eleanor) Powell. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Deborah (Debbie) Powell; children, Daniel (Danny) Powell and his wife Amber, and Kelly Baldwin and her fiancee Richard Cardozo; father, William F. Powell; brother, Douglas (Doug) Powell and his wife Erin; grandchildren, Andrew, Liam, Emma, and Dallas; and many nieces and nephews. Dave served with honor with the Virginia State Police for 28 years and retired with the rank of Master Trooper. During his career he worked as a road Trooper, training Trooper, helicopter F.L.I.R. operator, Motor Carrier Safety technician, and as a member of the State Police Tactical Team. He was also a member of a special FBI task force tracking stolen vehicles and finished his career as the State Police representative who oversaw and taught all police agencies in the area with the use of the Virginia Criminal Information Network. Dave was also a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and taught martial arts for many years. In addition, he was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. Dave had a love of motorcycles from an early age (possibly trying to outrun the police), and hanging at the gravel pits behind Hayfield High School. He had a great sense of humor. But his love was not only for the State Police or motorcycles, Dave loved his family. The family trips to Ocean City every summer - where the highlight was always the go cart and boogie board championships - filled his heart. Since he taught Debbie, Danny, and Kelly how to drive, it was a tough competition. His mom and dad and brother were among his finest champions, being there for the good times, bad times, and everything in between. Family and friends may gather at Jefferson Funeral Chapel on Sunday, April 23, 2023 from 4-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place the following day, Monday, April 24, 2023 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church starting at 10:30AM. Internment to follow at Mount Comfort Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia State Police Association in his memory.
