Charley Roy Poff Jr.

Charley Roy Poff Jr., age 87, of Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2024. He was a loving and dedicated husband to Susan Poff for over 60 years, and father of Deborah (Debbie) Poff (Robert “Bob” Hairfield) and Denise Wilder. He is survived by his brother Kenneth Poff (Holly), nieces Sharon Willett (Mike) and Rebecca Hehl; and predeceased by his sister Marion Tusing. (Charley) Roy was born to Charley Roy Sr and Margaret Gertrude Wheeler in Alexandria Virginia on August 27, 1937, and grew up in the Del Ray section of Alexandria, graduating from George Washington High School in 1955. Upon graduation, Roy received an award for perfect attendance for all 4 years of high school. As a young boy, in the Boy Scouts of America, he earned badges in communications (seemingly a precursor to his future career in Communications). Roy worked for American Airlines before joining the Army; he aced the test on Morse Code, received training under the Signal Corps then served his tour of duty in Orleans, France. Following the Army, he returned to American Airlines before finding his long-term career at the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company (where he met Sue). He spent the large part of his career at the Telephone Company at the Pentagon working closely with his counterparts at Defense Telecommunications Service-Washington. He retired in 1991 and was a self-proclaimed handy man thereafter. Roy’s sporting hobbies were hunting and fishing, he spent many years camping with his dad and friends in the woods hoping to bring home the spoils of their adventures; another target of his hunt was finding and cutting firewood and ensuring his family and friends had fuel for those chilly days of the year. He loved spending time doing projects around the house and helping friends and neighbors when needed; he worshiped (with Sue) at Groveton Baptist Church where he also served as an usher, volunteered to count offerings, and helped take care of the Church in general whether it be mowing, changing light bulbs or undertaking projects.
