Carrol Douglas Proffit

Penny was a loving husband and father, a very caring brother, uncle, and friend to many. He loved the outdoors, gardening, playing tennis and the Dixie Pig Restaurant where he and his friends solved many of the worlds problems at their table. He enjoyed country music and could whistle, sing and ever play “Red River Valley” on the guitar in his younger days. He enjoyed horseback riding and competed in the chair races at the local horse shows when he was a boy, on his beloved pony Ginny, who was ridden by everyone in the family during her 33 years, including the next generation of Proffits. He later came to enjoy snow sking and even owned a dirtbike for a brief time when Gary and Craig got into that. He was a knowledgeable Civil War historian and often took Janie, Gary, Craig and their cousins Carlos, Tee, Gary Preston and others to Civil War battlefields, where his great, great grandfather and three great uncles from North Wilkesboro, NC fought for the South. He mentored his sons in the business of asphalt paving with Proffit Brothers Paving which he owned with his brother Earl Donald (Donny) Proffit. Gary, Craig, Carlos and Cline (Tee), all learned the art of hard work by shoveling asphalt during the summer. In the winters often, Penny and Donny would build a house and teach the boys all that was involved with residential construction. Later in life, he got out of the paving business and more into the real estate and home construction business. He believed in giving people a “fair shake” when renting his houses and often saw a good quality in someone that didn’t show up on a credit report. Penny enjoyed kids and they gravitated to him. Angie and Pam loved going to their Uncle Penny and Aunt Janie’s house. Gary, Craig and their cousins Carlos, Tee and Gary Preston would go with them to Grandpops house on Mirror Lake, in Caroline County all the time to enjoy the county in every way imaginable. They all learned to drive beginning with a Farmall tractor and then a pickup truck before they were even in their teens. Later in life, Penny enjoyed being with his grandchildren and taking them on “great excursions” to the zoos, museums and other fun places and even invented the “nature trail” in the backyard, wherever they were at the time, be it at Courtney and Laurens, or Cline and Kylies. He was thrilled later in life to be a great Grandpop to Summer. Penny Proffit was a great example of a husband to Peggy and a father to Gary and Craig. He was loved by all the members of his family and many friends. Penny will sorely be missed by all. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr., Alexandria, VA Thursday, August 16 from 4-8PM, where a funeral service will be held Friday, August 17 at 11AM. Interment Mount Comfort Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sentara Hospice or your favorite charity.
