Wayne W. Mays Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Wayne W. Mays of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 1, 2022. Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia Golladay Mays and his son-in-law William “Woody” Betts. Wayne was the devoted father to Tammie Betts and Jennifer Mays and the proud and loving grandfather to Aaron Betts and Ryan Betts. Wayne is survived by his brothers Jimmy Mays, Greg Mays and Danny Mays; sisters Gail Brandenburg and Gracie Mays. He is preceded in death by his brothers Richard “Dick” Mays, Jr. and Phil Mays; sisters Anne Redwine and Iris Mays. Wayne was born on September 1, 1941, in a barn in rural Amherst County, Virginia to Richard Daniel Mays and Mattie Dora Cash Mays. Although he lived in Alexandria for most of his life, he still called Amherst County home. In his early years, Wayne enlisted with the Army National Guard, and following his honorable discharge, he was an insurance agent for Equitable Life. Later, he entered the roofing industry where he worked with his late brother Dick. There were no two brothers closer than Dick and Wayne. Faithfully each week they headed to the family farm in Amherst County where they worked the cattle, cut hay, and maintained the property and equipment. After the passing of brother Dick, Wayne continued the family farming tradition with his nephew Ricky Mays, brother Greg Mays and honorary grandson, Jake Keene. Wayne was a lifetime farmer and was happiest spending time on his John Deere Tractor. Wayne’s family and friends meant everything to him. Aside from farming, he loved spending time talking with his family and friends, especially sharing “stories” with his grandsons. Not to mention the countless hours he and his brother Jimmy spent talking on the phone. Wayne was a member of Mount Calvary Community Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He loved his “little white church by the side of the road” and considered the congregation to be family. During his illness, he and his daughters faithfully watched church services on Sunday morning on the computer. He enjoyed listening to Pastor Charlie preach, but more than anything, he enjoyed the music and the concerts.
