Kathryn Lynn Hook Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Kathryn Lynn Hook (VanOverschelde), 54 passed on May 20, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. She was the beloved wife of James F. Hook; sister to James VanOverschelde (Tambra Nelson) and the late Jeanne VanOverschelde; daughter of Barbara and the late Raymond VanOverschelde; aunt to Athena and Eliza VanOverschelde; sister-in-law to Judith L. Hook and Diane (Charles) Gennaro; and aunt to Matthew (Marina) Gennaro and Laura Gennaro, DMD. After graduating from The Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Class of 1990, Kathy started her first job at United Technologies. It became clear that Kathy was exceptional at writing and working with computers, leading her to a long career with government contractors and 18 years at the US Patent Office, ending as a Project Manager who excelled in management. In 1997 Kathy was introduced to her beloved Jim. They married in 2005 and started their life in Alexandria VA. Together they grew their passions. Kathy’s love for sports made it easy for the two to enjoy a healthy rivalry of hometown teams. When The Bills played the 49ers or the Sabres played the Panthers, you knew they were watching. And, those who knew Kathy, knew she was just as happy when Jim’s team won. If it was Saturday in the fall then you knew they both were watching Notre Dame. Kathy had a love for the arts. Going to college in Washington DC allowed her to attend great theater and shows at beautiful venues. Her subscription to the Kennedy Center was used often and she shared her seats with many friends, and she loved movies just as much. She could quote the classics and she planned ahead for the opening night of the latest blockbusters. Kathy’s pride and joy were her animals starting with her sweet Samoyed Kasha from her childhood. Then after college, she rescued a mutt named Bandit, and Jim introduced her to his adorable Shelties, and it was love at first sight. Kathy and Jim started a beautiful family with Bailey, and then Murphy and quickly Dana was added to make a team to be reckoned with. The love for Murphy was mutual, Murphy protected Kathy and guarded her from his post under the bed. Kathy’s life was filled with adventure, travel, and devoted friends. Her father‘s job gave the family the opportunity to move often starting in Connecticut and then to Long Island NY, but it’s fair to say Kathy’s high school years in Florida made her a Floridian and a parrot-head fan. Kathy loved a good Jimmy Buffett concert on a summer night with friends, but nothing beat her love for STYX and she always worked hard to get in the front row, to get her song lists, great pictures, and a few guitar picks. If you were lucky to be related to Kathy or call her a friend, then you were lucky enough. Kathy was amazing at forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. You could count on her being there for anything and everything. Her loyalty and love were yours to keep always. Kathy put everyone ahead of herself and loved so deeply and unconditionally. We all were blessed to have had our paths crossed with hers. She will be missed beyond words. Relatives and friends may gather at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315 on Thursday June 9 from 2-4 and 6-8PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1427 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302 on Friday, June 10 at 11AM.
