Joyce Farrington Rutherford

On January 21, 2022, Joyce F. Rutherford of Springfield, Va., died peacefully at The Fairfax at Ft. Belvoir Skilled Nursing Facility with family members at her bedside. She is survived by her five adult children: Mark (Denise) Rutherford of San Clemente, Ca., William ‘Ron’ Rutherford of Fairfax, Va., Carol Carlisle (Rob Lassiter) of Springfield, Va., Eric (Rochelle ‘Sissy’) Rutherford of Lynch, Ky., and Kirk (Marta) Rutherford of Springfield, Va.; sister Jean Hoover, brothers James (Vicki) Harrison and Richard Harrison, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Billy just seven weeks prior, and her parents Evelyn Rice and James Harrison, and adoptive father Howard Farrington. Joyce once worked as a telephone operator and supervisor, in a bridal shop, and founded JFR, Inc., her own bridal consulting business. Her true calling, however, she fulfilled as a military wife and loving mother to her five kids. She was exceptionally devoted to her husband for their 68 years together; and was selflessly committed to raising their kids in a home filled with support, love and laughter; often on her own while Billy’s work and military service took him away from the family for days, weeks and sometimes months at a time – including two year-long tours in Vietnam. Before life slowed down, she loved traveling, playing cards with friends, and going to the theater. Joyce was a people person who loved being around others and was quick to strike up a caring conversation with anyone she encountered. Joyce was able to remain at home until her final weeks because of the remarkable care and commitment of family members, neighbors, and friends. Jefferson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria will host a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022. There will be an interment service for both Billy and Joyce together at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
