Obituary for Edmund I. Goldwag

Edmund I. Goldwag died of complications from prostate cancer on October 19, 2018.
He was born in 1932 in New York City. After graduating college and serving in the U.S. Army, he worked for several years at David Berdon & Co., CPAs, while attending law school and passing the bar. Mr. Goldwag then came to Washington, where he spent most of his career at the Internal Revenue Service. He started as a tax law specialist and ended up in charge of the development of all Internal Revenue tax forms, instructions, and instructional publications for the public.

Mr. Goldwag discovered that he had the ability to sketch people and get a likeness quickly. After retiring from IRS, he became a courtroom sketch artist. He pursued his second career for about 15 years before retiring again.

Mr. Goldwag’s first marriage, to Judith Oshiver, ended in divorce. In 1988 he married Mary Findlay. Both ladies survive him. He leaves two children from the first marriage: Stuart Goldwag (Lori Tucker) and Melanie Kelly (Thomas Kelly). Four grandchildren also survive him. Second only to his love for his family, Mr. Goldwag enjoyed tennis, swimming, ballroom dancing, and travel.

A memorial service for Mr. Goldwag will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 23, at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22304. The family will welcome friends immediately afterward at the home of Jerry and Emily Willingham, Mr. Goldwag’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Burial will be in New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Goldwag’s memory to B’nai Brith (www.bnaibrith.org/giving.html [bnaibrith.org] or Bnai Brith International, 1120 20th Street, Suite 300N, Washington DC 20036) or to the Sibley Hospital Foundation (www.hopkinsmedicine.org/sibley-memorial-hospital/ways-to-give [hopkinsmedicine.org] or Sibley Hospital Foundation, 5255 Loughboro Road, Washington DC 20016).
