Her Journey Doris Jean Smith, affectionately known as “Dot”, peacefully transitioned to eternal life with our Lord and Savior on Friday, July 10, 2020. She was surrounded by her loving family. Doris was born on February 20, 1944 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Leroy and Lovie Mae Pruitt. She was the fourth of eight close and loving siblings. Doris graduated from Central High School in Mobile, Alabama in 1962. Throughout her high school years she was a majorette, a member of many social clubs, a very popular person and an excellent student. Doris was divorced and a single mother of five children. In 1969, Doris decided to make a better life for herself and her family by relocating to Alexandria, Virginia, where she was employed with Fairfax Hospital. Doris’ heart was so filled with love that she later became a foster parent, caring and nurturing children as if they were her very own. She was the neighborhood “Ma” and “Grandma.” Doris loved everyone and everyone loved her. Before relocating to Yorktown, Virginia, Doris became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she worshipped and served the Lord. Doris lived in Yorktown, Virginia for 20+ years until she later returned to Northern Virginia to live with her son and daughter-in-law. On a regular basis, Doris volunteered at Holiness Tabernacle in Woodbridge, Virginia, where she fed the homeless and worked at the food banks. Doris loved to play bingo and enjoyed the family game nights. She taught everyone how to play Phase 10, her favorite card game. She also loved to cook and was known for her famous homemade dressing. She was preceded in death by her father, Leroy Pruitt, Sr.; her mother, Lovie Mae Pruitt; her daughter, Chrisianthia D. Lambert; her brother, Leroy Pruitt, Jr.; her sister, Emma M. Pruitt; and her brother-in-law, James Smith. Doris leaves to cherish her memory her four children, Derrick A. Smith of Woodbridge, VA (former wife Janet Walker); Juan R. Smith (Renee) of Woodbridge, VA; Fytinia L. Smith-Colvin (Carlton) of Woodbridge, VA; and Sonya M. Mercurius (Winston) of Fort Washington, MD; five siblings: Allie Smith of Alexandria, VA; Creola Smith of Temple Hills, MD; Virginia Goodman (Bobbi) of Chattanooga, TN; Rex Pugh-Pruitt (Brenda), Mobile, AL; Johnny Pruitt (Alice), and sister-in-law, Barbara Pruitt of Arlington, VA; ten grandchildren: Lovie Greene (Marshé) of Evans, GA; Whitney Smith of Jacksonville, FL; Winston Mercurius (Keisha) of Fort Washington, MD; London Colvin of Norfolk, VA; Paige Smith of Jacksonville, FL; Antonio Mercurius of Fort Washington, MD; Alexis Smith of Woodbridge, VA; La-tiff Ray of Woodbridge, VA; LaToya Carter of Locust Grove, VA; and Tarneesha Roberts of Front Royal, VA; nine great grandchildren: Kaela Canady of Evans, GA; Karter Smith of Jacksonville, FL; Ava Mercurius of Fort Washington, MD; LaTijiah Carter-Benton, T’Leiyah Tolliver, Jesiah Carter, Crandell Edmonds Jr., Chosen Edmonds all of Locust Grove, VA; Micaya Boyd of Evans, GA; step-mother, Elouise Pruitt of Ocala, FL; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
