Obituary for David D. O'Kane

David Dean O’Kane, 75, passed away at his home in Alexandria, VA. He died surrounded by the beauty of his gardens and his architectural talents at his home and reclining in his favorite chair with his beloved dog Figaro.
Born in Parkersburg, WV Dave grew up on a farm in Millboro Springs where he learned about nature and building a beautiful environment. After graduating from Marshall University in Huntington, WV majoring in history, he entered the Army and served tours around the world and in Vietnam. He received many awards and decorations for his valor and service. He was esteemed as a respected commander in the many units in which he served and a consummate gentleman. He retired from military service as a full Colonel and then from civilian service after a successful career as an Inspector General investigator.
He was previously married to Susan Maffett and had one daughter Kathy.
He married his current wife Barbara Lynn O’Kane in 1988 and for 30 years they have had a beautiful warm relationship with lots of humor. Their son, Nathan Sean O’Kane and his cherished wife Crissi live in Salem, Virginia where Nate is an engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation and she is a teacher, travel agent and entrepreneur.
Dave is survived by his sister Nora (Tommy) Howell and her family and other family members.
Dave, a certified Master Gardener, whose great love was always flowers and trees spent hours each day tending to the splendor of his yard of water gardens, fountains, and beautiful landscapes. Many people said that it was the most beautiful gardens they had ever seen. He took great pride in his grass and was meticulous in every detail outside and inside his home.
Dave will be greatly missed by those who knew him, including his neighbors, and especially those at his wonderful church, Mt. Calvary Community Church, and by his wife who will always love him with all her heart.
Public viewing will be at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315 on Tuesday Oct 9 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. There will be a service for friends at 11 am with viewing starting at 10 am on Wed Oct 10 at Mt. Calvary Community Church, 6731 Beulah St. Alexandria VA 22310. Please no children under the age of five. The service will be followed by a military ceremony open to the public in the Beulah Cemetery next to the church where he will be laid to rest.
