Betty Lester

Madeleine Elizabeth (Betty) Lester (93) passed suddenly on March 24, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Mary Trice, husband Ralph Lester, brother Richard Trice, sisters, Jean Talbert and Shirley Galliot and daughter Linda Hunt. She is survived by her son Daniel Lester and wife Donna, brother Emmett Trice and wife Marie, sister Margaret (Peggy) Trice and son-in-law Cecil Hunt. She will be dearly missed by her three grandchildren: Connie Carney and husband Michael, Jeffrey Hunt and wife Emily, Jennifer Blackwell and husband Simon. She will also be greatly missed by her five great-grandchildren: Danny Hunt, Tyler Carney, Jonathan Carney, Bradley Blackwell and Carly Blackwell. Betty was born in Washington, DC on August 11, 1928. She grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy as the valedictorian of her class. Betty first met Ralph while working at the bank in Alexandria. They were married on July 9, 1948, and first lived in Alexandria. They welcomed their daughter Linda in 1949 and then their son Daniel in 1950. They then moved to Gunston, Virginia and after that moved to Lorton, Virginia in 1960 where she resided until her passing. Betty had many different careers in her lifetime. After high school, she worked as a bank teller in Alexandria. After she was married, she worked at the Women’s Lorton Correctional Facility as a guard. After that, she worked for the US Army at Fort Belvoir as a Substance Abuse Counselor until she retired in 1991. She most loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always asking us to bring the children to see her. They loved visiting her and always left with a bag full of goodies. She enjoyed talking to the kids about what was going on in their lives. Betty also enjoyed watching General Hospital and QVC. She loved talking on the phone and reading the Washington Post every day. She loved reading everyone’s horoscope daily. Recently, she enjoyed taking care of her outdoor cats and other creatures. She also looked forward to milkshakes delivered from Danny almost every day. A viewing and memorial service will be held at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, Virginia 22315 on Thursday, March 31 beginning at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow directly after at Mount Comfort Cemetery 6600 S Kings Highway, Alexandria, Virginia 22306.
