William Farrell Powell

William Farrell Powell (92) Passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2023, of Alexandria, VA. Loving husband to the late Gladys Eleanor Powell; beloved father to Douglas Powell (Erin) and the late David Powell (Deborah); brother to Gary Powell (Nancy) and Darlene Hildreth; grandfather to Danny Powell (Amber), Gary Powell, Kelly Baldwin (Rich), Melinda Powell (Abel Trevino), Wyatt Powell; great-grandfather Liam Baldwin, Emma Baldwin, and Dallas Powell. He will truly be missed by many. Bill was born in the small town of Floodwood, Minnesota on August 1st., 1930 to Lorne and Ina Powell. He was one of five children. Bill's father was a cabinet maker and passed on the craftmanship to Bill. Bill loved woodworking almost as much as Fishing and hunting. Bill served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He saw combat during his time in Korea during the conflict there. After Korea, Bill was assigned to the Pentagon working with what is now known as "Project Blue Book". It was his assignment there that Bill met his future wife, Eleanor. After his time of service with the military, Bill worked several jobs. He was a door-to-door salesman for the Electrolux vacuum cleaner company. He then worked as a brakeman for the Southern Railroad. Bill then joined the Alexandria Police Department in 1954 where he worked as a patrolman and then a detective until he retired in 1977. Bill was a passionate father to his twin sons, Dave and Doug and taught them how to hunt and fish and the correct way to become men. Bill then became the most excellent grandfather to his grandchildren who were , along with Eleanor, Doug and Dave the absolute loves of his life. Bill will always be remembered for the love of his family and his many friends. Everyone who knew him said he always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. He will be missed by all of the people whose lives he touched. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315 Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 4-8PM. Funeral Service to be held Wednesday, June 7, 2023, 11AM. Interment directly following Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 South Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Alexandria Police Association, 3010 Colvin Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
