William Roy Butts

William Roy Butts, 84, of Alexandria, Virginia passed peacefully on December 21, 2023. He was the husband of recently deceased and cherished Maxine Clark Butts. He was preceded in death by his much-loved son Woody Betts (Tammie). He is survived by his daughter Crissy O’Donnell (Kevin) and proud grandfather of Aaron, Jack, Bethany and Ryan. Bill is also survived by his loved sisters-in-law Mary Reedy (Frank) and Sharon Blankenship (Dennis) and brother-in-law Arnold Clark (Pam). Bill was born in New York City to the late Elizabeth Butts and Harwood Butts. He was raised in Mohawk, NY as an only child and enjoyed holidays and summers with his many cousins (aunts and uncles) vacationing by the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York. Following graduation from Mohawk High School he attended Syracuse University where he studied Horticulture. After a few years Bill joined the Army where he served for 3 years in various roles including his favorite role as a member of the Fife and Drum Corp. Bill and Maxine were united in marriage in 1964 in Arlington, VA. Within a few years they moved to Franconia where they started their family with the birth of their son Woody and soon after Crissy came along. As a family, they enjoyed many years of beach trips, camping, childhood sports and adopting many animals including cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, fish, and horses. Bill and Maxine had a heart for animals and enjoyed showing off their sweet little dogs Angel and Abbie. Bill enjoyed building and caring for his backyard garden railroad and was proud to share his passion with many neighbors, friends and especially his grandchildren. In his later years, Bill was an active member of both the Mount Calvary Community Church and Calvary Road Baptist Church where he sang with the Gospel Group and in the Choir. Bill was most happy when he was singing and visiting with the many friends he and Maxine made while living in the Franconia community for 60 years. The Sunday Lunch Bunch was the highlight of their week and brought both Maxine and Bill much joy. The family would like to express their gratitude to friends, neighbors and family for their care and friendship with Bill and Maxine over the last year. Also, we are thankful for Bill’s exceptional caregiving team of his Home CNA, Inova Nurses, Techs and Doctors, and the Fairfax County EMS team. A Musical Celebration of Bill’s life’s will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Noon: Mt.
