Seymour "Sy" Sherman

Seymour “Sy” Sherman, age 80, passed away on May 22, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose generosity and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Sy was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Harry and Dora Sherman. He was raised alongside older sisters Lillian and Myrna. In 1967, he married Roberta Rubin, and together they shared nearly 58 years of love, joy, and partnership before Roberta’s death in 2025. Sy and Roberta raised two children, daughter Wendy Kamen (Howard) and son Eric Sherman (Lisa). He was the proud grandfather of Sarah, Amanda, Abby, and David, all of whom brought immense happiness to his life. Sy was a computer programmer by profession, starting his career as a mathematician for the U.S. federal government before a long and distinguished career in the private sector with IBM, SAIC, and Northrop Grumman that took he and Roberta from New York City to Northern Virginia. He was a certified Six Sigma instructor and was an early adapter of new technologies in both his professional and personal life. Sy was a founding congregant and longtime choir member at Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, where his kindness and service to the community was deeply appreciated. In retirement, Sy taught personal finance classes for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI). He was also an avid golfer, with a personal highlight being the hole-in-one he made in his mid-70s. He was Reston National Golf Course Men’s Senior League commissioner for many years and had recently taken up pickleball. Sy was also an enthusiastic traveler. Between work and personal travel with Roberta, he visited all seven continents. Sy was renowned among family and friends for his joke telling and comedy play writing, with many of his scripts that centered on his life with Roberta being performed in the local community. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 24, at Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, located at 1441 Wiehle Avenue, Reston, VA 20190. Burial will follow at King David Memorial Gardens, 2712 Hollywood Rd., Falls Church, VA 22042.
