Ruth Eleanor Bury

Ruth Eleanor Bury (née Ingagliato) of Springfield, Virginia passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 11, 2025 in Fairfax, Virginia at the age of 100. She was born on May 5, 1925 in Canton, Ohio to Carmine A. Ingagliato of Cilento, Italy and Candita Gamboni of Canton, Ohio. Ruth spent most of her childhood growing up in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Eastern High School in 1943. After high school, she pursued an education in nursing from Johns Hopkins. In June 1946, she married Francis Berkley Bury of Washington, D.C., a War World II Navy veteran and physics technician at the Naval Research Laboratory. Together they share four children, Kathleen Bury of Alexandria, Virginia, Stephen (Jane, decd.) Bury of Springfield, Virginia, James (Debby) Bury of Jacksonville, Florida and Mary Anne Fisher of Tucson, Arizona. After Francis’s sudden passing in 1970, Ruth returned to the workforce first as a dental technician and then as a multimedia librarian for the Archdiocese of Washington. She retired from the Archdiocese of Washington in 1999. Ruth leaves behind a strong legacy of family, including five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will always remember her for her quiet demeanor, sharp wit, and a sense of humor that shone through in unexpected moments. She loved singing and was a dedicated member of choir groups since elementary school. She also had a deep affection for animals, especially the Boxer dog breed, and found great joy in following the Triple Crown horse races every year. Ruth was a lifelong fan of the Washington Commanders, and through all the ups, downs, and name changes, her loyalty never waivered. Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Funeral Chapel (5755 Castlewellan Dr, Alexandria, VA 22315). Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic Church in Springfield, Virginia followed by burial at 1:00 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Greenspring Village Scholars Fund which provides postsecondary scholarships to students who work at Greenspring Senior Living Community, where Ruth was a resident for the last 26 years and a dedicated member of the philanthropy club.
