Rosendo T. Mendoza

Our beloved Rudy was 72 years old when he died in the late evening on Thursday, April 24th 2019. He was one of two children, with older brother Cristino, born to parents Amado and Segunda Mendoza in Baliuag, Philippines. He raised 3 beautiful children, Hazel, Jonathan, and Jeffrey and was always filled with joy to see his grandchildren, Emily, Aubrey, and Michael. In his college days, Rudy studied and became a skilled architect, receiving his Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the University of the Philippines. At Southern Iron Works, his drafts laid the foundation for several buildings in Baltimore, Old Towne Alexandria and Washington, DC. When he immigrated to the United States, Rudy lived with his best friend, Jun Villones, in Baltimore, MD. It was here in the mid-1970’s where he met his soon-to-be wife of 40 years, Leonora Pegarido. Rudy was an artist who sketched still-life and painted realistic and surrealistic/abstract art. Five medium-sized and 5 large-sized watercolor paintings are displayed at his home in Alexandria, VA. He also loved being a DIY handyman with Home Depot and Lowes as his favorite stores. He built shelves on the walls of his home, constructed a fence around the backyard, laid down concrete to expand the driveway, built a see-saw and backyard shed, and laid down wood flooring for the entire house. Rudy loved listening to music and the radio. His favorite genres were rock and roll, disco, and pop of the 1940’s through 1970’s. His favorite artists were Frank Sinatra, Tom Petty, and The Rolling Stones and he had a collection of over a hundred vinyl records and 8-track cassettes. Throughout his life, Rudy was a devout Roman Catholic. He and Leonora renewed their wedding vows at St. Louis Catholic Church last year, where they have been parish members for over 40 years. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr., Alexandria, VA on Friday, May 3rd, 2019 between the hours of 5-9 PM. A funeral mass will be held the next day, Saturday May 4th, 2019 at St. Louis Church, 2907 Popkins Lane., Alexandria, VA 22306 at 11:30 AM. Internment at Mount Comfort Cemetery will be shortly after at 1 PM the same day.
