Michael Dean Salmon

With a long dedication to the United States Marine Corps and the United States of America, Lt. Colonel Michael Dean Salmon, 88, lived a life dedicated to the country, his family and community in Alexandria, Virginia where he grew up and lived off and on for many years throughout his life. On July 31, 2025 after battle with cancer, he died quietly with family and friends by his side in his home in Alexandria. Michael grew up in a military family, moving around the country, attending several schools before graduating from U.S. Naval Academy in 1958 as a Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant. He served in the Vietnam War in 1967-68 and received a Bronze Star for his actions in Khe Sanh serving the 26th Marines. He received a purple heart as well as a Bronze Star for his combat action in Khe Sanh. After his tour concluded, he served with the Marines in Quantico, and then the Pentagon as the Aide to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As the aide, he traveled the world and worked with international officials. The family settled in Alexandria’s Hayfield Farms, near Fort Belvoir during this tour of duty. He found joy in mentoring his children, coaching little league baseball and softball. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1978 And continued work with the government at several contracting organizations, finally becoming a program manager at DCS in Old Town, Alexandria until his retirement in the early 1990’s. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia Louise Salmon. He is survived by his children, Catherine Louise Boggess (husband Henry) of Hanover; Michael Patrick Salmon (wife Mary Jane) of Fredericksburg; Richard Dean Salmon (wife Robin) of Rose Hill; Marianne Gabriel Lynch (husband Jim) of Chalfont, PA. and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends will be received at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315, on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 5-9PM. A Funeral Service will be held at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 1PM. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
