Mernie Jean Andrews

Mernie Jean Andrews April 27, 1923 – March 1, 2020 Mernie Jean Andrews (deceased March 1, 2020) was born in 1923 in Mouth of Seneca, West Virginia, to Snowdon Sites and Bessie Miller Sites (both deceased). She is also pre-deceased by a brother, Ralph Sites, and two sisters, Virginia Sites Waybright and Blanche Sites Hyre. Jean and her husband Leroy Andrews (deceased 1990), were married in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1943 where Leroy was serving in the U.S. Army Corps. After Leroy’s discharge from the military, they moved to Silver Spring, MD. Shortly thereafter they settled in Alexandria, VA, where they spent the majority of their 46 years of marriage. She was a member of Del Ray Baptist Church and Del Ray United Methodist Church. While busy raising four sons, Jean also worked as a cashier at Fort Myer Army Base in Arlington and drove a school bus for Arlington County Public Schools, where for many years as she also served as a transportation supervisor. She loved meeting new people and cultivated those friendships through her love of bingo, bowling, and travel. Jean and Leroy traveled to Germany and later drove across the United States and back. After her retirement, Jean traveled frequently with a local travel club to places as exotic as China and as mundane as trips to Atlantic City and Charles Town where she loved to play the slots and usually came back with a few more dollars in her purse than when she left. As a devoted wife and mother, Jean’s family was the center of her life. She loved big family gatherings and was famous for her bountiful Thanksgiving dinners. Jean has four sons: Danny Lee Andrews (wife Mary Andrews); Jimmy Harold Andrews (wife Gale Sherry Andrews); Larry Dean Andrews (wife Betty Fuller Andrews); and Randy Alan Andrews (deceased 2011) (wife Lisa Reynolds Andrews). She has nine grandchildren: Cathie Andrews, Danny Andrews Jr., Jason Andrews (deceased 2016) (wife Rebecca Andrews), Stephen Andrews (wife Erin Brophy Andrews), Sherry Andrews, Katie Andrews Oakes (husband Michael Oakes), Michael Andrews, Joseph Andrews, and Kelly Andrews Revell (husband Matt Revell). She was also blessed with enough years to enjoy nine great-grandchildren: Teagan Andrews, Madelynn Andrews (deceased 2010), Xavier Andrews, Carter Andrews, Jackson Andrews, Mark Oakes, Emily Oakes, Harper Revell, and Ruston Revell. Jean will also be missed by a host of extended family, friends, and neighbors who had the pleasure of knowing her during her 96 years. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.
