Mary Jane Thornton

MARY JANE THORNTON August 17, 1935 - April 14, 2024 Mary Jane Thornton, born in Manassas, Virginia, to Dorothy Virginia and Walter Wine Breeden, passed away on April 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard Fielding Thornton (Dick) and the cherished mother of five children. Mary Jane was the eldest of nine siblings and leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to her family. Known for her joyful spirit and love for her family, Mary Jane will be fondly remembered for her frequent picnics, where she brought together loved ones to enjoy the outdoors and each other's company. She had a love of adventure and travel, always seeking new experiences and embracing life's opportunities. Some of her adventures took her to China, Egypt, France, and Greece. Mary Jane was an active member of her community and Mount Vernon High School. As a secretary for the school from 1973 - 2000, she also served as the social director and played a significant role in fostering a sense of community and school spirit. In recognition of her outstanding service to the school and community, Mount Vernon High School established the Mary Jane Thornton Award, honoring individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication, school spirit, and genuine regard for all individuals in the school. She was also an active participant in various organizations, including her Church, the Garden Club, DAR, and UDC, where she shared her passion for gardening, genealogy, and community service. Mary Jane is survived by her children and grandchildren: Carol Ann Thornton (Susan),Teal & Mark; Mary Beth Jordan, Kristine, Kathleen, & Kerri; Virginia Wootton "Ginger" (Taylor), Ashley, Taylor, & Hillary; Richard Lewis Thornton (Brenda), Jason, Joshua, Cory, & Laura Jane; Ronald Blair Thornton (Loy), Chandler, Brent, Lucy, & Luke; and her loving sisters, brother, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Fielding Thornton, son-in-law, Eugene Jordan, and grandson, Ronald Blair Thornton, Jr. Mary Jane Thornton will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to service will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in eternal peace. A celebration of Mary Jane's life will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11 am, at Washington Farm United Methodist Church (3921 Old Mill Road, Alexandria VA, 22309). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church in her memory (Washington Farm United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 36, Mount Vernon VA, 22121).
