Mary Edna Rees

Mary E. Rees, 69, of Alexandria VA died August 22, 2014 at Fairfax Inova hospital. Her long time partner Terry Nagy, and her sisters Fran and Jean were at her side. Mary was born May 28, 1945 in Pottsville, PA, the second of seven children of the late Francis and Anna May Super Rees. She graduated in 1963 from Nativity BVM High School in Pottsville and later received a Bachelors Degree in computer science from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. Until retiring in 2001, she was employed by the U.S. Department of State as a manager in the computer science arena, which provided her with many interesting challenges, including traveling to and living at embassies worldwide. After retirement, she and Terry started a computer business, where they developed a loyal following among laypeople and nerds alike. Mary had an irrepressible personality, a quick wit, a gift for outrageous story telling and a zest for life. If you met her, you would remember her forever. She had a generosity of spirit and a deep love of family and friends. After being diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2009, Mary began a long and furious battle against the disease. Despite her many challenges, she was determined to live every day to the fullest. Her struggle was an inspiration. Just two weeks before she passed, she enjoyed her annual vacation in Myrtle Beach with her sisters and her "southern" relatives, where the super organized Mary oversaw the exchange of contact information for a burgeoning family. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother James W. Rees and her sister Barbara R. Rees. Mary is survived by her partner Terry Nagy, Alexandria VA and four sisters, Frances and her husband Richard Maurer, Severna Park, MD, Margaret Rees from Haddonfield, NJ, Jean Rees from Alexandria VA, and Joan and her husband Dr Steven Katz of Lock Haven, PA plus five nieces Jennifer, Amy, Kate, Julie, Emily and an aunt Sylvia Rees of Boynton Beach FL. Services are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to any one of Mary's favorite charities: the Whitman-Walker Clinic, the Special Olympics of Virginia or the ASPCA. Mary will be missed but will live on in our hearts.
