Mary Jo Gaskins Culbertson

Mary Jo Gaskins-Culbertson was born June 14, 1936 in Ridgeley, West Virginia to William and Mary Malamphy. She had 3 wonderful siblings who have all preceded her in death, Thomas Malamphy (Margot), Frances Chester (Charles), and William Malamphy (Sally). Mary Jo passed away comfortably in her home in Lorton, VA on December 28, 2020 with her husband, best friend, and love of her life, Earl Culbertson, by her side. Mary Jo grew up in Frostburg, MD and graduated Saint Michael’s High School in 1950 where she then went to work for the FBI and met her first husband Robert Gaskins, Sr. (preceded). They went on to have two beautiful children, Pamela (Brown) Conley and Robert Gaskins, Jr. (preceded). She wore many hats in her beautiful life, Executive Assistant to the Chief Pilot Office at USAirways for 30 years where she retired in 2017, most recently Chaplain of the Moose Lodge and many more, however, the hat she wore best and loved most was that of a tap dancer. She competed for many years with her granddaughters and went on to light up the stage every June for 40 years right up to this very year. She was an excellent chef and an avid, long-time parishioner of St. Lawrence Catholic Church but most of all, Mary Jo was a true friend to all. The last few years of Mary Jo’s beautiful life were spent living like a teenager in love. She and Earl traveled to their heart’s content and loved spending weekends together in their home on the water in Delaware where she would sit on the porch reading her books while sipping her wine. They were a true match made in heaven and they both knew and appreciated their time together was a gift and they lived it to the fullest. Mary Jo is an enormous loss to all of her family and friends and she will be dearly and deeply missed. Immediate family includes her sister-in-law Ronnie Hazen (Dave), sister-in-law Mary Fortney (Bill), brother-in-law Joe Culbertson and brother-in-law Cliff Culbertson (Carol) Bonus children includes Earl Culbertson (Lisa), Barry Culbertson (Donna) and Brian Culbertson (preceded) (Dianna). Grandchildren includes Kristen Bushey (William), Lisa Wentworth (Ned), Charlene Thorpe, Sean Taylor (Tiffany Lewis), Katilyn Gaskins as well as bonus grandchildren Adam, Jason, Brandon, Raymond, Robert, Duke and Conner Culbertson. Great-grandchildren include Anthony, Alex, Alysa, Rylee, Edwin, Mason, Presley, Hailee, Jameson, Brayden and Paisley. It goes without saying that Mary Jo had an overabundance of friends whom she also loved and cherished dearly.
