John David Daly

John “Jack” David Daly – 88, died peacefully surrounded by his loving twin children on May 27, 2026 in The Villages, Florida. Jack was the beloved husband of Lenore (Schreiner) Daly, with whom he shared over 57 years of blissful marriage. Born on July 4, 1937 and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, Jack was the son of the late David B. and Hazel (Canfield) Daly. He graduated from Classical High School in Springfield in 1956 and from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1961 with a degree in history. In 1973, he received a Masters of Arts in Hospital Administration from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Jack was employed by the State of New York for 37 years of distinguished public service, retiring in 2001. Originally recruited into the State’s Management Internship Program, he served as a budget and management analyst in several state agencies including the Division of the Budget, the State Office of Planning Coordination and the Department of Transportation. A graduate of the Army National Guard’s Massachusetts Military Academy, Jack received an officer’s commission in 1961 and was assigned to the 104th Infantry Massachusetts Army National Guard. He further served six years as an officer in the 210th Armor New York Army National Guard. After moving to Albany, NY in the 1960s, Jack met his lovely future wife, Lenore, a newly barred attorney working in the New York State Attorney General’s Office. They married in October 1968. Active in Albany reform politics, in 1971, he served as chairman of the Albany Citizens Convention for an Elected School Board, which advocated for a directly elected school board that would be more responsive to student’s educational needs than the current process of a mayor-appointed school board. His efforts were rewarded when Albany transitioned initially to a hybrid, and eventually to a fully elected school board, which it remains today. Following the birth of his twins, he unsuccessfully ran for School Board in 1981. A passionate amateur musician, Jack played the string bass, electric bass guitar and E-flat tuba in multiple orchestras and bands in the Albany area, including for 20 years in the bass section of The Schenectady Symphony. He also played string bass with the Capital Philharmonic in Albany, where he served as personnel manager, and with the Delmar Community Orchestra in Delmar, NY. Jack also annually played the string bass in the pit orchestra for his daughter’s high school musical productions, which they both really enjoyed. He shared his love of classical, jazz and Dixieland music with his children through the wonderful concerts they got to attend throughout their childhood to watch their father play. After retiring, Jack remained active in the community as a parishioner of St. Madeleine Sophie Church, playing music and serving as an elected member of the Guilderland, New York Public Library Board of Trustees from 2002 through 2007, when he and Lenore decided to embrace Florida’s warm weather and bought a home in The Villages. After five years of traveling back and forth between New York and Florida, in 2012, Jack and Lenore relocated permanently to The Villages. Jack enjoyed golfing, walking their dog, Killian, and joined numerous clubs, including the opera lovers club and he enjoyed playing string bass with The Villages Orchestra. He loved receiving visitors, especially his children and his young grandchildren, Violet and Sebastian, who he frequently worried would crawl away from him and get stuck under the coffee table. Jack is survived by his loving wife Lenore of The Villages, FL; son, Joshua David Daly of Branchburg, NJ; daughter, Sabrina Canfield Daly of Alexandria, VA and her husband, Richard Vogler; grandchildren, Violet and Sebastian Daly-Vogler; sisters-in-law, Laurel Schreiner of Amherst, NY and Florence Schreiner of Auburndale, FL; cousins Frederick Daly of Mendon, MA, and Brian Daly of Farmington, MI. Jack was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Marilyn Canfield Daly, and many other wonderful family members and friends. Jack was a devoted family man, husband, friend, and a true gentleman. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 6222 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA 22310, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the George Washington/Mount Lebanon Cemetery, 9500 Riggs Road, in Aldelphi, Maryland.
