James Lee Glendenning

James L. Glendenning (81) was born on June 18, 1940 in Wichita, KS and passed away on January 2, 2022 after a brief illness with covid at the I.C.U of Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, VA. Jim was predeceased by his parent’s Lee and Louise Glendenning and his older brother Stanley R. Glendenning. He is survived by his loving sister Rhea Wilson; 2 nephews - Douglass Glendenning (Gretchen) and Christopher Wilson (Aimee) and 1 niece – Deane Denny; 5 great nephews – Matthew Glendenning (Jessica), Stephen Wilson, Dillan Glendenning (Alexandria), Brock Glendenning (Marissa), and Michael Glendenning; 5 great nieces – Courtney Orton (Darren), Melissa Glendenning, Maggie Glendenning. Whitney Fredrickson (Tyler), and Cydney Wilson; 5 great-great nephews – Price Orton, Austin Glendenning, Miles Glendenning, Theodore Glendenning and Cameron Glendenning; and 11 great-great nieces – Linley Orton, Reese Orton, Emerson Orton, Blakely Orton, Sienna Glendenning, Jade Fredrickson, Vera Fredrickson, Aubrey Glendenning, Aniston Glendenning and Stella Glendenning – all of whom he deeply loved; his partner Claude Mayo and his children Ryan Mayo and Paul Mayo. Jim was predeceased by 1 nephew – David Glendenning (Michelle) and 1 great-great nephew – Harris Hunter. Jim was raised and attended elementary and high school in his hometown of Wichita. He completed 3 years of undergraduate studies at St. John’s college and Wichita State University. Jim majored in music with emphasis in vocal performance and sang lead tenor roles in several operas and classical selections. He had an incredible talent but, unfortunately, not the significant funding to continue his training and promote his career. In 1967 Jim joined the United States Marine Corps and soon after spent a 13 month tour in Vietnam and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in combat operations. He made several close friends during the war that he kept in touch throughout the years. Jim retired from the Marine Corps in 1987 and for the next 22 years worked as a legal records manager for the Marriott corporation and then the D.C. law firm of Latham and Watkins. He retired in 2009 and spent much of his time working in the yard and doing “DIY” projects. He loved watching tv, especially sports and the news, socializing with friends and keeping up with the ever-expanding family. Jim will be especially remembered for his wonderful smile and the glint in those blue eyes. He had a kind and loving heart, and his presence will be sorely missed. A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 3pm at the Ft. Myer post chapel, Hatfield gate entrance at 104 McNair Rd., Arlington, VA, 22211.
