Harriet Horton Fatzinger

Harriet Horton Fatzinger was born on July 7, 1936 and died on July 10, 2011. She was born in Durham, NC as the daughter of Paul and Edith Holloway Horton. She graduated from Durham High graduation from airline school, she was employed as a teletype operator in Detroit, MI by Capital Airlines for one year. She moved to Washington where she was employed first as a teletype operator and then as secretary to the head of the Engineering Department of United Airlines at National Airport. She worked for 13 years for United Airlines. When her United Airlines job was moved to San Francisco International Airport, Harriet decided to become a nurse and entered the nursing degree program at the Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, VA. She graduated in 1972 from the Northern Virginia Community College cum laude with an Associates Degree in Applied Science in Nursing and became a registered nurse. After graduation, she was employed in the operating room of the Fairax Hospital and as an RN for handicapped children at the Francis Scott Key School in Fairfax County. Later, she was employed as a school secretary at the Groveton Elementary School for 13 years in Fairfax County. For the past 18 years, Harriet was very involved in volunteer church work at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Faifax County where she served as an elected church elder on the church governing board on two different occasions. While serving as an elder, she was co-founder with Rev. Jeri Fields of the church's very popular Agape Reservoir fellowship program for persons with special needs. That program, which has been operating successfully for 11 years, has been recognized as an outstanding program nationally by the Presbyterian Church. At the time of her death, she was serving as a church elder. Harriet is survived by her husband, Dr. Glenn B. Fatzinger, of nearly 49 years and daughter Jennifer at home. Her only sister, Drucilla Bonnett, predeceased her 12 years ago. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Dr. Alexandria, VA on Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm. A memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church. Blood donations to the Alexandria Hospital would also be appreciated.
