Frederick John Roe

Frederick John Roe, of Alexandria, Virginia, died August 19, 2026, at Fairfax Hospital. Frederick was born September 3, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey, the third child of Fletcher John Roe and Lillian Alberta Roe [Kniffin]. Fred devoted much of his professional life to public service and tax work. He worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 35 years as a revenue agent, with assignments in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Paris, and throughout Western Europe. He retired from the IRS in 2005. Following his retirement, he began a second career with Block Advisors, where he worked for approximately 20 years as a tax advisor. Fred excelled in that role and was recognized as a top advisor with Block Advisors. He developed lasting relationships with many loyal clients who returned to him year after year because they trusted his knowledge, patience, and judgment. Outside of work, he was also the person friends and neighbors frequently turned to when they needed help making sense of their taxes, and he was always willing to help them find clarity. Fred was deeply involved in his son Christopher's childhood and activities. Over the years, he was active in soccer, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts, serving in multiple leadership and management roles. Whether an organization needed someone to help coordinate an activity, drive to an event, take on a responsibility, or simply lend a hand, Fred was willing to step in wherever he was needed. His involvement reflected the way he approached family life: by being present, dependable, and ready to help. In his spare time, Fred enjoyed gardening and canning with Rita, as well as traveling and exploring. He enjoyed trips around the country, and when his health made longer journeys more difficult, he continued to find enjoyment exploring the back roads of Virginia and West Virginia. Fred was happiest when there was somewhere to go and something new to discover, even if it was only down a road he had never traveled before. He appreciated the farms, produce stands, small towns, and unexpected places found along the way. Among his favorite destinations were Orr's Farm Market in West Virginia and Sipes Christmas Tree Farm in White Post, Virginia. A simple drive could become an outing, and he was always interested in seeing what might be found around the next turn. Fred is survived by his wife, Rita Wolberg; his son, Christopher Wolberg, and daughter-in-law, Joslyn Wolberg, of Richmond, Virginia; and his three grandchildren, Fletcher Thad Wolberg, Emilia Jade Wolberg, and Carrie Lane Wolberg. He is also survived by his nephews, Kevin Mills and his wife, Bernadette, of West Orange, New Jersey; Mark Mills and his wife, Karen, of Mattawan, New Jersey; and David Roe and his wife, Shelley, of Apex, North Carolina. He is also survived by his cousins, Raymond Roe of Jupiter, Florida; Judith Jensen of Melville, New Jersey; and Harriet Willis of St. Augustine, Florida, as well as numerous other cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his sister, Carol Hazel Roe Mills, and her husband, Richard Mills, as well as his brother, James Edward Roe. Visitation at 11:00 a.m., A Service of Death and Resurrection at 12:00 noon, both at Mt. Calvary Community Church. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Shurtz Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
