Frances Virginia Shumaker

Frances Shumaker died on July 19, 2022 at her residence in Paul Spring Retirement Community. She was 101 years old. Frances was born March 8, 1921 in Brunswick, Maryland to Ernest and Agnes (Baker) Burch. She had four older brothers who doted upon her. A few years later another girl, Agnes, was born and became Frances’ closest friend Frances was educated in the public school system of Brunswick, where she met Clarence Shumaker during her junior high years. It was love at first sight – the prim and well-mannered city girl completely infatuated with the handsome farm boy and the farm boy, in turn, enchanted with the lovely lady. Upon graduation from high school, Clarence accepted a position with the telephone company. When Frances completed her studies, she went to work at the bank in Brunswick. The couple dated for several years and were planning to be married when World War II intervened. Clarence joined the Marine Corps and saw significant combat in the Pacific Theater. Frances wrote him daily during his tour of duty. He returned home in the summer of 1946 and the couple were married on September 14 of that year. Clarence returned to his position with the telephone company and the couple relocated to Alexandria VA, accompanied by Frances’ widowed mother, Agnes Burch, who lived with them until her death. Frances was active in the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), of which she was member for over 80 years, including serving as Worthy Grand Matron of her chapter. Frances returned to the banking profession in which she worked for more than 20 years. The couple purchased a home on Tremont Drive in Alexandria in 1954 and Frances remained there until 2017. Clarence cultivated a beautiful garden with a spectacular spring flowering of dogwoods, redbud, daffodils, tulips, and azaleas. Although they did not have children of their own, they were beloved by their nieces and nephews and the children of their many friends. The Shumakers worshipped at Cameron United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Frances loved to travel and took special pride in having visited all 50 states – and most of the state capitals. In 1983, Brenda and Steve Sprague moved next door to Frances and Clarence. In the ensuing years the two families became very close with the Shumakers acting as surrogate grandparents to Ben and Tim. The boys had free rein of both yards and the corner was alive with activity. In 1999, Clarence passed away as a result of long-term heart disease. Although she was broken hearted Frances courageously began a new chapter in her life. She was active in the United Methodist Women’s group and continued her association with OES. As she grew more frail she moved to Paul Spring Retirement Community, where she became friends with many residents and staff. The family wishes to extend our thanks to the staff of Paul Spring Retirement Community and Capital Caring Hospice for the loving care they provided to Frances in her final years.
