Donald "Don" Edward Mayer

Donald “Don” Edward Mayer of Herndon, Virginia passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the early age of 47 years old. He is preceded in death by his mother Evelyn “Jane” Mayer, and sister Lisa Marie Wilusz (Dan Wilusz). Don is survived by father, Donald William Mayer, his siblings, Richard Mayer (Jeanine), Robert Mayer (Alice), Amy Klein (Bob), honorary sister Dale Potts Jepsen, and many nieces and nephews. Don was born in Manassas, Virginia on July 30, 1975 to his parents, Don and Jane Mayer. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1993. In his professional capacity, Don was a high-level IT technician displaying his skills at TNS and Booz Allen Hamilton. He was self-described as a “Crotchety old man in training, Dungeon Master, Owlbear Enthusiast. I tweet about dumb stuff.” According to his close friends, the D&D quests Don created were epic in their community. Don was an avid fan of all DC professional sports teams (Capitals, Nationals, Wizards, Commanders, DCUnited, Mystic, Spirit and Kastles!) and soccer teams, USMNT, USWNT and Tottenham Hotspur FC. His passion and overall knowledge of the sports world was an incredible treasure trove of information. He had great interest in the Space Program and was extremely excited to follow the progress on a return to the moon and a manned space flight to Mars. Don’s true passion was traveling the country to ride the next ‘latest and greatest’ roller coaster or thrill ride. He could recite every statistical metric about each one and describe the experience with great realism. Don was an integral part of the Mayer family and his jovial personality and quick wit will be greatly missed. He lived an incredibly sublime life during his time on this Earth. Our favorite owlbear will always be in our hearts. A family only graveside memorial service will take place at Mount Comfort Cemetery in late March. A Celebration of Life, followed by a luncheon, will be held at PJ Skidoos in Fairfax, Virginia. Anyone who knew Don is invited. Please pass this information to his friends, etc. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests that photos and stories about Don be shared to keep his legacy alive.
