David E. Woods Sr.

David E. Woods Sr., 86, of Gainesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on May 22, 1939, to the late Joseph and Eddie Lois Woods, David was a man of unwavering faith, deep love for his family, and a lifelong passion for music and service. He was preceded in death by his siblings Sandra Compton and William Woods. David is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene A. Woods; his children Dana Johnson (Pete), David E. Woods II (Kim), Karyn Luckado (Jesse), and Jonathan Woods; and his stepdaughters Danielle Nystrom (Keith), Amy Dominick (Frank), and Crystal Lee (John). He also leaves behind his beloved siblings Thomas Woods (Margie), JoAnn Taylor (Spencer), and Andrew Woods (Teresa), along with eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews who brought him immense joy. A graduate of Lynchburg College, David began his career working alongside his father at the Quick Shop in Alexandria before opening his own IGA grocery store. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Pioneer Produce, where he served numerous stores across the D.C. area, including Subway and Pizza Hut. Later, he opened Pioneer Garden Center, which became known for its seasonal stands offering plants, fireworks, pumpkins, and Christmas trees. David also successfully operated Pumpkinville, a cherished fall festival in Leesburg, where families made lasting memories year after year. David’s love for music was ever-present—he found joy in playing guitar and singing. A loyal sports fan, he especially enjoyed football and baseball, and earlier in life proudly served as a scout for the Baltimore Orioles. More than anything, David’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was passionate about sharing the love of Christ and devoted many years to ministering to inmates at the Fairfax County jail, offering spiritual support and hope for redemption. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, followed by interment at Schurtz Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of David’s life immediately afterward at Reality Church, 5937 Franconia Rd. David E. Woods Sr. will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of faith, family, music, and service will continue to inspire and uplift for generations to come.
