Curtis E. Ross

Curtis E. Ross, 100, passed away quietly on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at his home in Springfield, VA. Curtis outlived the three most important women in his life; his loving late wife, Helen Louise Ross, and his cherished daughters, Therese Smith and Annamaria Arnwine. Curtis is survived by his son John Ross (Leigh), four grandchildren, Eve Pascarella (Chip), Erin Lesnick (Mike), Emma Ross, Tucker Ross, great-granddaughter Ava Pascarella, and his sister Betty Kay Schmidt. Curt was born on January 20, 1923 in Grand Glaise, Arkansas to Milfred E. Ross and Lena Ethel Carter. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Clifton and Raymond. Upon graduation from high school in Bradford, Arkansas, he moved to Washington, D.C., and was employed by the U.S. War Department. He served in the Army Air Corps during War World II stationed in the Pacific Theater Air Offensive-Japan from 1943 – 1946 with assignments at Wright Patterson Air Corps Base in Ohio, Hickam Field in Hawaii, and Harmon Air Force Base in Guam. While stationed at Wright Patterson Field, he met and married his sweetheart, Helen Louise Tohill. They met on a double date with his late wife’s sister Eileen and future husband Joe Loicano, spending weekends dancing the night away to big band music. His love for swing music continued throughout his whole life. After military service, he attended Strayer Business College and American University while employed by the U.S. Army Material Command. He retired from the in 1979 and founded CER Inc, a management consulting firm specializing in industrial engineering. When he moved to Greenspring Village, he was instrumental in establishing the American Legion Greenspring Post 123 and served as Charter Commander. He also volunteered at the VFW. His love of flying took him to air shows, including the Reno Air Races, the Blue Angels, and volunteering with the Boy Scouts Explorers Program at Manassas Airport. He enjoyed many weekends on his boat, Miss Flip, named after his wife, and during baseball season you would find him watching several games at a time. Visitation will be at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152 at 10:00 a.m followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Quantico National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any veteran organization of your choosing.
