Ann Harding Smith

Ann Harding Smith, age 87, of Fairfax, VA passed away on December 19, 2023, due to complications of stage 4 bladder cancer and heart issues. She is survived by her four loving sons, David (Kathie), Michael (Carolyn), Patrick (Stefanie), and Jeffrey (Stacey); nine grandchildren, Jamie, James, Cathleen, Lindsey, Caitlin, Shyla, Megan, Michael, and Julia; her sister, Donna; numerous nieces and nephews, including Christopher, Cathy, Debbie, Carolyn, Ric, and Kevin, to name a few; and her beloved friends. Ann is predeceased by her late husband, Lieutenant Commander James A. Smith of the United States Navy; her loving partner, John; her brother, Rod; and her parents, Bernice and Chester. A local Virginian and alumna from Washington & Lee High School and Longwood University, Ann had dreams of exploring the world. Ann loved her multi-year career as a stewardess for United Airlines, always telling stories of her adventures, famous run-ins, and continuing friendships with her fellow Clipped Wingers years after leaving that career. Other careers in her life included being an administrative assistant for a software company, working alongside her son, nephew, Christopher, and brother, Rod. She also spent time being a friendly face at the Air and Space Museum. Ann traveled the world with her friends and late partner, John, exploring new places and taking in serene sites. Other passions of Ann's included: dancing, specifically the Charleston, catching up with friends, book clubs, going to the beach, and being an active Gold Star wife. Ann always put family first, becoming a widow and single mom to four boys under the age of five (God bless her!) and raising them to grow and become amazing men. She was also very close and cared deeply for her nephew, Christopher. Known as "Mum Mum" to her beloved grandchildren, she beamed every time she saw and talked about them. She supported the dreams, aspirations, activities, etc. of her children and grandchildren, attending many sporting events, dance recitals, graduations, Sunday night dinners, and so much more! Visitation will be held at Jefferson Funeral Chapel on Wednesday 12/27, followed by a service at 1 pm. Interment to be scheduled at a later date at Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California, where she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband. Love you more, Ann!
