Alice Elvira Schmitt

Alice E. Schmitt (nee Cubillo), passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, at the age of 95 surrounding by her loved ones. Alice and her husband, Richard Schmitt, were married on September 11, 1954, until Richard’s passing on February 29, 2008. Alice was born in Newark, New Jersey, but moved at a very young age to the lower East Side of Manhattan as she lovingly called “Alphabet City”. Alice grew up in the era of the Great Depression with her mother, Elvira Cubillo, and father, Francisco Cubillo, and only sibling, Frank Cubillo. She enjoyed growing up in the city and often said to her children, “If you could only image the city with very few cars and horses!” My mother was 16 when WWII ended and was in Times Square for that historic celebration! My mother was part-trailblazer when she entered NYU for college studies. She unfortunately contracted Tuberculosis at the young age of 20 and spent 2 years in hospital quarantined from the world. Through all this, she and her family persevered. Alice met her soul mate, my father Richard, on a blind date in Manhattan in March of 1954 at the age of 25, an old maid according to her. They were introduced by a friend of my father’s who was serving in the military with him. That gentleman, Herbie, was also dating my mother’s cousin Roberta as fate stepped into their lives. My father was a Brooklyn man who came from a large Irish-German family. My mother is 100% Mexican who came from a small family whose father had immigrated into the US. Despite this, they instantly fell in love with one another. My mother said it was almost taboo in that day and age considering their backgrounds. As the story goes, my father had told her he was about to be shipped overseas. He said that did not need to happen if they got married. He proposed and they were married 6 months later. A great New York love story! Together they raised four children. In the 60’s they moved out of Brooklyn to Rockland County, New York, and ultimately to New Jersey in 1979. They remained in New Jersey until 2001 when it was no longer possible for them to live alone. They lived the remainder of their lives in suburbs of Washington DC with my brother and his wife and two daughters. My mother dedicated her entire life to her family, her husband, her children and all those around her. She felt complete by caring for others. She was completely unselfish in this respect. Alice will be greatly missed by her four children and their spouses: Richard and Elizabeth Schmitt, Matthew and Elsa Schmitt, Jerome Schmitt and Camille and Frank Gramieri; her grandchildren: Alyssia, Kyle, Rachel, Natalie, Mary and Connor. She is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mickey and Dorothy, Frank, her nephew, three nieces, Laurie, Jennifer, and PJ and pre-deceased by her niece, Linda, and cousins and loved ones across the country.
