Maxine Ann Butts

Maxine Butts (79) of Alexandria, VA, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023. Loving wife to William Roy Butts; beloved mother to Crissy O’Donnell (Kevin) and the late William "Woody" Clark Betts (Tammie); sister to one brother and two sisters; grandmother to four grandchildren. She will truly be missed by many. Maxine grew up in Oakwood, Virginia with her adored sisters Mary and Sharon, brother Arnold (Bubby), and loving mother and father. She loved her siblings dearly and felt blessed to grow up close to aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Upon graduating from High School, Maxine bravely headed off to find adventure and moved to DC where she became the covergirl for the Red Cross. Her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes made for photos the Red Cross was proud to share nationwide. Maxine soon met her future husband, Bill, and they fell in love and married in 1964 in Arlington, VA. They lived in an apartment in Arlington until they decided to buy a home in Franconia, VA where they would start a family. By 1966 their first child was born, a much loved son named Woody. Every year on January 31st Maxine would share the story of Woody’s arrival during a blizzard! Within a few years their daughter Crissy was born, during a heatwave in August 1968. Maxine’s family was now complete and she was so proud. The following years in their home were filled with birthday parties and celebrations for every holiday that included much love and laughter. Maxine had a way of making everyone and every celebration a special event to remember. Maxine would make one of her famous soups and many delicious desserts, nobody would leave hungry. Maxine’s family continued to grow when Tammie married Woody and a few years later Kevin married Crissy. Maxine loved Tammie and Kevin and was so happy to have them as part of her family. When Maxine became a Nana she had even more love to share with her four grandchildren, Aaron, Jack, Bethany and Ryan. Aside from creating a beautiful life, she also created beautiful art that brightened the world. She was a painter and floral designer who shared her talent with many friends and family. The wedding flowers she lovingly designed for numerous brides, the painting classes she held for neighborhood children, and the cardinal paintings she gave as gifts will always be treasured. Maxine would spend hours every day reading God’s word and praying. She prayed for everybody and would offer words of encouragement to bring hope and brighten the lives of everyone that knew her. We are comforted in knowing she is now in God’s hands. Relatives and friends may call at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315 Friday, October 20, 2023, 4PM-7PM. Funeral service will be held at Calvary Road Baptist Church, 6811 Beulah Street, Alexandria, VA 22310, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, 3PM. Interment immediately following at Schurtz Cemetery, Alexandria, VA.
