Obituary for William Joseph Kovalcik

William Joseph Kovalcik of Alexandria, Virginia died peacefully at home with his family at his side at the age of 73 on November 11, 2017. He is preceded by his parents; Philip and Susan Kovalcik, his brother Philip Kovalcik, and his sisters; Mary Sue Innes and Phyllis McWilliams.

Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann, his brother Jim Kovalcik, sisters, Judy Gaudiano and Jackie McMahon, three daughters; Karen, Colleen, and Erica, and his six grandchildren; Shelby, Reid, Olive, Knox, Logan, and Adeline. He will be dearly missed by all.

Bill was born August 2, 1944 in Ashley, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Saint Leo’s High School and attended technical school to study surveying. Bill worked with the Lane Construction Company for over 30 years beginning his career as a surveyor and retiring as a Quality Control Supervisor. He always displayed the highest of work ethics and appreciated the community and support of the Operating Engineers Union, Local 77.

Bill married his high school sweetheart Mary Ann Hawkins in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in 1964. After moving to Milford, New Jersey they welcomed their first two daughters Karen and Colleen. In 1970 the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia where their third daughter, Erica, was born. Bill was a devoted husband and exceptional father.

Bill touched many lives with his genuine kindness and loving spirit. His connection to people was strong and genuine enough to unite his Muslim friend and Catholic priest in prayer. Although his family and friends will mourn his physical passing, Bill’s spirit, presence, and influence will continue to live on in their lives. He lived his life built on the foundation of love and kindness. His legacy of compassion, strength, honor as well his bright smile, warm spirit and boyish charm will be forever remembered.
