Obituary for Walter Donald Kemmet

Walter Donald Kemmet of Alexandria, VA passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017. He was born on February 18, 1936 in North Dakota. At 17 he joined the Army and served as a Fire Station Chief in Pusan, Korea and as a medic in the Burn Center at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, TX. He returned to ND and worked as a guard and Deputy Warden at the ND State Penitentiary for several years. In 1977 he purchased a small grocery store in Alvarado, MN. Later Walter worked for the Federal Government, moving between GA, MA, and DC until retirement. He was a graduate of Mary College, attended University of ND, and obtained a PhD in 1993 from Kensington University. He enjoyed many cross country trips spending time with family and friends. He and his wife hiked many trails in state and federal parks. Walter watched old westerns and Motor Week and was a real car buff. He read the newspaper everyday cover to cover and enjoyed science fiction short stories. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher Kemmet and Ida Werre Kemmet; sisters, Luella Kemmet Hins, and Bernice Kemmet. Survivors include his beloved wife of 52 years Karen Jean Kemmet; daughter, Rebecca Kemmet Kleven (Duane Kleven) of Mayville, ND; son, Kevin Kemmet of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren; Jonathan Kleven (Heather) of Baltic, CT; Ashley Kleven Folarin (Folas) of Cleveland, OH; great grandchildren Caleb and Sophia; grand dog, Sunshine; sister, Eldora Kemmet Schneider of Turtle Lake, ND; brothers, Robert Kemmet of New Brighton, MN, Ronald Kemmet of Aitkin, MN, Curtis Kemmet of Dayton, OH; Randy Kemmet of Moorehead, MN; a large extended family and many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 5952 Franconia Rd, Alexandria, VA 22310 on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private on a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or your favorite charity.
