Obituary for Shawn Kathleen Schutzmeister

SHAWN KATHLEEN SCHUTZMEISTER, age 55, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on August 10, of complications from metastatic breast cancer. Born in Opelika, Alabama, Shawn was an administrative assistant at the Logistics Base in Albany, GA, when she met (then Captain) Scott Schutzmeister just weeks before his deployment to Operation Desert Storm. As “distance made the hearts grow fonder”, they were married in Savannah, GA in 1993 and started their amazing journey together. Shawn was devoted to her husband and children as an Army spouse and established extraordinary bonds with friends and within communities, especially during their 14 years in Northern Virginia where they retired in 2013. Shortly after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2003, the Pink Warrior Princess displayed her courage and resiliency, raising tens of thousands of dollars advocating for breast cancer research, and rallying support during community and sporting events. Whether the National Race for the Cure, Dig Pink, Relay For Life, or INOVA Life With Cancer, her purpose was to demonstrate how to share, care, and kick cancer’s butt. When her cancer spread, there was nothing but boldness during her battles, whether radiation surgery, a decade of chemotherapy, or brain surgery in 2015. Her strength - physical, emotional, and spiritual, was nothing short of heroic. Shawn is survived by her husband, Scott, and her children Savannah (22) and Shane (18); her father, Jack Broadhurst of Saline, MI; her mother, Kathy Schuman of Titusville, FL; her sister, Leslie Ratliff & husband Leon of Summerville, SC; her sister, Jacque Mueller of Belleview, IL; and brother, Harry Broadhurst & wife, Jennifer, of Belleview, MI.
A memorial service will take place at Burke Community Church in Burke, Virginia on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 3:00pm, followed by a reception at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to INOVA Life With Cancer.
