Obituary for Paul F. Unger

Paul Franklin Unger, 90, of Alexandria, Virginia, died July 21, 2017.
He was born in Oakland, West Virginia, on May 24, 1927, to Boyd F. and Ervie R. Unger.
Paul was a carpenter by profession. In his early years he renovated historic homes and built custom residences, but he was extremely proud of his accomplishments as project manager supervising the on-site construction of commercial buildings for Centennial Contractors. In 1983 he was awarded the Excellence in Land Conservation award for the Centennial Plaza II project by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. His hobbies included tinkering on his restored Mercedes Benz and hand-crafting furniture in his woodworking shop. He loved to share stories about his early life on the farm in West Virginia and his many years in construction.
He is survived by the love of his life, Freda J. Mauzy. They were married on April 20, 1946. This past spring they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Also surviving are his three children, Richard and wife, Sharron of Alexandria, Virginia, Larry and wife, Debra of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Pamela and husband, Larry Wolford, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four grandchildren Matthew Wolford, of Greenville, South Carolina, Nicole Unger of Woodbridge, Virginia, Erin Olson and husband Erik, of Blacksburg, Virginia and Kelly Unger of Greenville, South Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Jack and Evi Weiss, Jackson and Julia Wolford, and Lilja Olson; two brothers, Kenneth Unger of Winchester, Virginia, Boyd (Junior) Unger of Winchester, Virginia, and sister, Virginia Kerns, of Gore, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Eric Unger. Though he loved his work, his proudest accomplishment was raising his family in the home he built for them.
The family will receive friends at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, VA 22315 on Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011.
