Kathryn Rae Mattox, 60, of Alexandria, Virginia, died on December 29th, 2017 while aboard a holiday cruise through the Panama Canal.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Kathryn graduated from East High School and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University. She and her husband of 33 years met in Paris, France, studied together in Jerusalem, Israel, and lived in various locations throughout the United States and Europe.
A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kathryn emulated the life of the Savior every day through loving acts of service, cheering the sad and lonely with her lively conversation and happy laugh. She served faithfully for many decades in many volunteer capacities within the Church, including as a missionary in the New Zealand Christchurch Mission.
Kathryn went by many names, but her favorite was what her grandchildren called her, “Nana.” She is survived by her husband John Mark of Virginia; son John Mark II (Sommer) of Kansas; son Paul (Alexis) of Utah; parents Arthur and Phyllis Geurts of Utah; father-in-love Raymond Mattox of Virginia; eight brothers and sisters; an abundance of nieces and nephews, and her pride and joy—four grandbabies.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 10th from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Both the viewing and the funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 6219 Villa Street, Alexandria, Virginia.
She will be interred in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Burlington, Kentucky.
Funeral arrangements will be made by Jefferson Funeral Chapel, Alexandria Virginia.
