Obituary for Ila Mae Avery

Ila Mae Wallace Avery, 94, transitioned to the next phase of her long life on September 24, 2017, joining her beloved husband John W. Avery. She is survived by her loving children: Bill Avery, Larry Avery (Cheryl), Sandy Axelson (Bill), her granddaughter Kristin Axelson (Jacob Warstler) and her great grandson, Eli Warstler; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born April 1, 1923 in Johnston County, NC, Ila Mae was witness to an amazing transformation of the world and the country. This included living through the great depression, a number of wars including World War II, and the transformation of our country into a world power. She and John moved from North Carolina after World War II and built a solid life in Northern Virginia, raising three children who all excelled in their lives. She never met a person who was not a friend, was well loved by all who met her, and frequently became a surrogate mother and mentor to many. Where wealth is measured in terms of the number of people positively touched by a person throughout their life, Ila Mae was a fabulously wealthy person. Her presence in this world will be missed and mourned but she will be charming all she meets in heaven where she reunites with John and family and friends that preceded her. A celebration of Ila Mae’s life will be held at Noon on September 30, 2017 at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria Virginia.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
