Obituary for Grace A. Simon

Grace was born on January 16, 1926 in Hartford, Connecticut to John and Agnes Patinsky. She inherited a strong work ethic from her parents, helping to support the family by working in the nearby tobacco fields after school, and later, as a secretary working in downtown Hartford. While others her age were getting married shortly after high school, Grace exhibited a rare sense of independence for the time, and enjoyed her freedom and making her own money. She and a group of her girlfriends (also secretaries), intrigued by life on the west coast, even traveled across the country to California, taking jobs and staying for a few months at a time in cities along the way. Eventually, Grace returned to the east coast and Connecticut where she met and married Harvey Simon. They would have three children, and ultimately settle in Northern Virginia where Grace continued working as an administrator until she retired at the age of 71.
Initially fearful that she would be bored in retirement, Grace focused her enormous energy on her lifelong hobby of gardening. She had inherited a passion for growing all things from her parents, who had a small farm in Connecticut. She continued to work her garden, growing vegetables and flowers until her final year. She credited “staying busy” as the secret to her long life. In addition to staying active by planting, she showed that independent spirit of her youth into her 90s, often by walking miles to the local library, taking the subway into town to go shopping, or to have lunch with her daughter. Her vibrancy and stamina remained intact through treatment for breast cancer in her 80s, and not until a diagnosis of COPD in her last few years was there a decline in her mobility. After a brief illness, Grace A. Simon died surrounded by family on May 8, 2018 in Wheaton, Maryland at the age of 92.
Grace was a warm and vital woman who made friends easily and enchanted all with her sparkling eyes, positive energy, and genuine smile. It was rare for a person who had just met Grace not to exclaim “Isn’t she just adorable.” She will be missed by all.
